Colophon
What this site is made of.
- Built with
-
Astro (opens in a new tab) 7. Every page is rendered to plain HTML when the site is built, so nothing runs on a server when you load one. Most of the words live in Markdown files in the repo.
- Normal mode
-
What you’re probably looking at. Plain HTML and CSS, and it works with JavaScript turned off. On a wide screen, a bit of JavaScript draws the colored squares either side of the page; they hold still if your system asks for reduced motion.
- Themes
-
XP mode is a theme: a folder with a manifest and a module that only downloads when you switch it on. It only offers itself on desktop. The whole setup is written up in A theme is a folder.

- Tracking
-
Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits. It doesn’t use cookies or follow you from site to site, it’s switched off for visitors in the EU, and that’s the only analytics. Your light/dark and theme choices are saved in your own browser’s localStorage and go nowhere else.
